Isn’t it time we start to reduce our energy consumption? One group in Idaho Falls says our taxes are too high and government too inefficient, but our (previous) mayor and city council maintain that Idaho Falls has too many fixed costs that cannot be ignored or reduced. One of these costs is our city-wide energy consumption. One simple but great idea to reduce this consumption might be to replace our current grid of street lights with solar-powered street lights.
A recent story from Scotland describes innovative municipal street lights that not only are solar-powered, but also relay WiFi Internet connection signals. City-wide WiFi is a contentious issue emerging across America, but solar-powered street lamps seems to be a no-brainer.
Googling the subject reveals more stories than solutions, and the few solutions are at websites that do not look very professional.
Given that this is a no-brainer product, what is holding back someone from marrying up existing solar technology products with existing street lamp products? The product would seem to only have to attach to the top of existing poles. Might someone locally be able to manufacture this type of product, starting in Idaho Falls and eventually selling to cities worldwide?

I still can’t believe with all the energy focus we’ve seen the last year and all the smart engineers living around here that nobody has done this yet!
Sharp sells solar powered street lights, now. There needs to be some focus on smaller impact development with programs like the 1% public art requirements in cities like Denver, in my opinion.
Solar and wind power should be on the local, state and federal governments agenda. Our city power consumption cost almost as much as running the jails and prisons. Even nuclear power is good. I wish they would let someone develop a car that was powered by solar and wind. The car would store energy from the solar panels. Then use that stored energy to start the car and when the car gets upto speed on a highway or freeway. The car could open a front panel allowing air to be fed into a tube full of little props that could power the motor in the car. That would be cool. I am all for wind ,solar and nuclear power.
If you guys look around town you might notice that many school zone lights are solar powered. You can see the panels up above the signs.
Does anyone know though what the cost of these are? Depending on that it might take decades to recoup the investment.
I am interested in finding out all you have on the sharp Photovoltaic
street lights. Including Price, size and wattage and dimensions
and availability. We are interested in about 75 of them. Thank you.
Ummmm Norman….just an FYI…this site doesn’t sell solar powered street lamps. You’re better off going to Google and doing a search that way.
See how easy it is to garner interest in this product? I would be thrilled to see somebody locally start up a business manufacturing and selling these. Your market is any town worldwide, even third world countries since they do not need a power grid.
Anyone looked at solar panels for their home lately? I know the prices dropped on them but they are still too expensive. It still takes many years to recoup your investment.
I would like to no what it costs to burn one street light for one year, the mercury vapor type that most cities use today. If every city cut off every other street light, what would the savings in money and oil from all our suppliers that are so wealthy be? How much money could we spend on jails and extra police that these lights are supposed to keep us safe instead. we could save enough money to hire police on the street and build jails to keep the crooks in instead of early outs because of over crowding and letting them loose. We might could kill two birds with one stone. We could put oil prices down and keep the money here in the US and feel safe again at home and on the streets.
Green Applied Sciences or Gas technology here in the US has developed a solar and wind powered street light which is extremely effective. We can take the street pole off the grid and actually make it a power producing fixture. Come take a look at the website and we would be happy to provide more information
