Improving Our Local Offerings

Let us hope we could improve our town so our most redeeming qualities are not described as “cheap housing, low employee wages, and a reasonable drive to other places much more interesting“. I sometimes think I am too hard on my hometown, but our image is confirmed by visitors who now blog about us.

For instance, take a look at this visitor’s perception from just a few short months ago. He admits his picture is not great, but his descriptions do us no favors and they are not written in a mean spirit. We truly did give him little reason to stay here, and who can fault him for being glad to get on the road again as he traveled to more interesting destinations?

Linda Milam is being honored this week for her years of service to Idaho Falls. She has done a great job in laying a strong foundation, however we hope the next mayor will be able to lead us to a place where Idaho Falls is described in better terms than that described above. IdahoFallz.com was conceived partially from the idea of exchanging ideas to help improve our city. This improvement must matter not only to us natives, but also to our image as perceived by visitors.

Our ‘great leaders’ have steered our burg towards being a service economy, yet we grow at a snail’s pace since we have nothing interesting to offer. Fast food architecture and chain outlets do not distinguish our town. A five-lane Sunnyside road does not make Idaho Falls memorable. The fact that we now have runoffs in our city council elections does nothing to truly help promote us.

What are your big ideas for improving Idaho Falls?

I think that Idaho Falls needs to be more diverse. More things for visitors to come and due and remember alot. I think that they say that downtown is “diverse”. It is not. While we do have many local shops and such, it is not. They need to do more to refinish the buildings, and i personally think that someone should purchase on of the whole buildings downtown, perhaps, The Rogers, and make it into a mall. The y should add on and make it alot larger, i also think that a movie theatre that showws current moveies would also be nice. I wish Idaho Falls downtown resembled Salt Lake City’s alot. I am not LDS, and i do not have anything against them. I think that the downtown SLC is gorgeous and we should try to replicate their success, but still had some Idaho Flava to it!
