Dome guy performed the interesting experiment of trying to wash his own checks in the interest of finding a better way to protect himself. He wrote several checks using four different types of pens, and tried to scrub the ink off them in a variety of ways.

The main conclusion for us consumers is to use gel-based pens when we write our checks. The ink simply would not scrub off. If your checks every get stolen by no-gooders, at least you can be sure they won’t be able to wash your ink and use the check how they want.
