Bike Rally Festival

A spring bike rally would be nice in Idaho Falls. This could be held at Tautphaus Park and/or our greenbelt. Besides bicycle-related attractions, the rally’s major event could be a police-escorted public bike ride around Idaho Falls. That’s right, imagine police blocking off 17th street for 2 hours and only bicycle riders are allowed to ride up and down the road. This festival would be mostly about promoting outdoor exercise activity and pedestrian awareness among drivers in Idaho Falls.

Here are a few ideas for attractions at this type of event:

I think the education for coexistence between bikers and motorists would be really helpful. We had another discussion thread last summer about that issue, and it took a few comments back and forth to learn that bicyclists actually do function as both a motorized vehicle and a pedestrian in different circumstances.

I imagine some of the local high school kids would love a bike fashion show.

I think a free bike tune-up event, like in the parking lots of the local bike shops or on the greenbelt, would be really helpful. A buddy showed me how to tune up my bike a few years back, and it was amazing all the little ways your bike comes apart slowly over the season.

Bike races would also be neat for small prizes.

I think the bike-to-work-week would be excellent if the PR did a small story each day on it. They could photograph the person riding on their way to work, get the interview portion at the day’s end, and publish it the next morning.

I’d like to see our mayor, some city council members, and some prominent local business owners profiled for biking to work.

This certified bicycle nut agrees. These are all good ideas. The only problem I’ll have is choosing which of my 5 bicycles to bring.

One small victory for us bi-pedalers :) is that Mayor Fuhriman has committed to making sure the new skatepark will be built to accomodate BMX bikes.

Yeehoo!

Maybe I’ll get to ride it before my back finally gives out completely.

Yooooo nevermind and others,

I’m looking to turn an 80’s vintage Japanese roadie into a single speed for biking around town. If you’re available I’d much appreciate some advice.

Any updates on bike events in I.F.?
