Taming TiVo Suggest

A buddy threw up his hands in disgust the other day when his TiVo DVR started recording paid commercial programs. The infomercials were recorded as a result of TiVo’s ‘Suggest’ feature. Here are the steps to turn off this feature and rein in your TiVo.
The TiVo DVR used to be king of the industry, but it is quickly falling out of favor. One reason is the limited hours available to record compared to generic DVRs. The limited hours issue is compounded by TiVo’s ‘Suggest’. This feature records programs that it ‘thinks’ you will like based on other things you watch and the thumbs up you give to other programs. The problem is that TiVo’s artificial intelligence is just not that intelligent.
Shut off TiVo’s ‘Suggest’ feature by following these remote control commands:
- Square ‘DirectTV’ Button
- Messages and Settings
- Settings
- Suggest
- No, don’t record programs using Suggest
Does anyone else have tips to mitigate TiVo annoyances? Please comment with any suggestions.

Someone told me the suggest feature can be handy, but you need to go do a ‘thumbs up/thumbs down’ on your programs for it to get an idea of your viewing habits and then it’ll record shows more in line with what you like watching.
