Dish DVR’s hidden search function

I envied TiVo’s search functions since my Dish Network generic DVR did not seem to offer any search function. It is there, but it takes a little digging to find it.

First hit the ‘Menu’ button on the top left of your Dish DVR remote control. Select ‘2-Themes & Search’, then ‘9-Search’. You are presented with a keyboard display that you use to type out the letters of your search term. Yes, typing out the letters is arduous but after entering a phrase once, you can pull it up again later by selecting the ‘History’ option in the search menu.

The shows found by the search function also allow you to see the show details by selecting the result and hitting the ‘Info’ button on your remote. There is an area to the left of each show, where a colored bar or letters indicate channels that are not in your current subscription package. I wish these shows would be filtered out, but at least they visually indicate that you cannot access those shows.
