Reed’s Dairy is Really Delicious

The small Reed’s Dairy store on west Broadway is a great local treat.
The ice cream is obviously their biggest draw. It is made fresh on site and they offer many interesting flavors. You can also take home a tub for about $5. Right now Reed’s has their seasonal pumpkin ice cream for only $3.50 per tub! Their ice cream tubs are perfect for taking to work and sharing with co-workers.
I am a die-hard 2% milk drinker, however their skim milk is incredibly delicious. It tastes just like other stores’ 2%. Reed’s chocolate milk is luscious because it is so thick. They also have excellent cheese curds.
The store is small but very clean, and the numerous teenagers working there are usually surprisingly polite. Other businesses around Idaho Falls would do well to get their teenage employees to be as polite to customers as Reed’s teens are.
There is also a drive-through around a second building, but this is a hit-and-miss experience. I have been stuck at times waiting for someone to even come to the window. Sometimes they did not have the requested item and I had to wait awhile for them to bring it over from the main building.
Overall, though, Reed’s Dairy on the western edge of Idaho Falls is definitely a superior local source of dairy products. I am surprised they do not have another store on the east side of town, or that they do not sell their products for resell around town.

As a happy Reed’s employee, let me tell you, getting a job there is not an easy process. The interveiws and tests we take make the nice teenagers not so much of a surprise.
Thoguh sometimes the drivethru runs out of things, youb etter bet that as soon as someone orders it, we SPRINT into the store to get it (and a few extras to be safe) and then run it back out, to makeyour wait as short as possible
BoredGirl: the times I went through the drive through, I often wait a few minutes watching the employees ignore me before opening the window. When they have run out of items, I see them stroll casually to the main building and not return for several minutes; I have never seen a worker ’sprint’.
The main store is the best bet at Reed’s; avoid the drive-through.
Last night I saw an episode of Unwrapped on the Food Network. The subject of this half hour of national television: The Potato.
Several local shout outs and on surprising one: Reed’s Dairy. I didn’t know they put potato flakes in their ice cream?
And Joe, they say adding potato flakes is the reason their chocolate milk is so creamy!

Wow, I’ll have to catch that episode if it repeats. I’m glad to hear Reed’s is still in business after all these years-so many of the businesses I remember from living in IF during the ’70s are gone now.
And my first “paycheck” job was at Reed’s during my senior year at Skyline. I’m happy that they still teach their employees proper customer service, even if they do fall short sometimes (c’mon, they’re still teenagers!) I still remember learning how to handle 4 glass milk bottles at a time to re-stock the cooler in the store. I had some great biceps back then!

Eat the ice cream, just don’t register on their Web site. I did last year — to find a date for their family festival — and found myself on a mailing list for some American Fark, Utah-based real estate investment seminar — The dairy owner sent us all an e-mail letting us know he’d signed us up for it.
Reed’s makes the best licorice ice cream around! Alot of people think it is gross but it is reason enough to drive across town for me! I agree that the main store is a much better bet than the drive up. I haven’t tried one of their ice cream cakes yet but I’m thinking of getting one for my son’s birthday next month. Has anybody tried one yet? I would love someones opinion on them.
Which scam emails do you mean? I’ve only received the ones about salsa for sale.
Either way, can’t beat their milk and ice cream!
I’d also like to hear about anyone’s experience with their ice cream cakes. I wasn’t aware they made them. Cold Stone is tough to beat on that one IMO. How does the price compare? Do they decorate for kids parties?
Cotton-candy ice cream! I saw it and thought, “that’ll probably be too sugary but it looks interesting.” The girl gave me a little spoon sample, and it was awesome. I think this is one of their temporary flavors so if you get a chance grab a tub of it.
Also just wanted to update that I still consistently and constantly always experience great customer service from their exclusively teenage workforce. Maybe the chamber of commerce should think about a members meeting where Reed’s owners talk about how they get their teenager workers to behave so well.
We’re talking about wanting to see greenbelt food vendors in another discussion thread here, I think Reed’s could be one of those vendors. They could send a teen or two out with an ice cream cart for a few hours and probably sell out each of those warm summer days.
A person I work with sent me the link to this discussion. I appreciate the comments. Your challenges from our company will give us some things to work on. I am thankful for all of the communities support to our company.
One clarification I would like to make is about our email list. I am not sure where the problem with getting emails from another company came from. I never share our list of email address with anyone else…never. I am the only one that sends out emails. There are only a couple of people in my office that even know how to access our email list. I hate spam emails I would never want create more for anyone else. I am the only person you will ever hear from if you are on our list.

Awesome news I received in the mail - Reed’s is setting up an automatic payment by credit card system for deliveries. Yahoo! No more trying to remember to leave checks in the milkbox, call or write in that’s what you’re doing, that was too much time-consuming hassle IMO. Much easier to debit/charge it right out of my account on a weekly basis and forget about it. Thanks for doing this guys, and thanks for the free chocolate milk for signing up!
P.S. I’ve never received emails from other companies via Reed’s - I didn’t get that post at all. The only ones I get are from Reed’s about salsa or special sales or notices, not at all intrusive and actually quite rare.
We are faithful Reed’s customers. We haven’t rec’d this note about autopay. That would be good for sure.
We will note that the dairy really uses its email for ordering. They’ve never made a mistake when we’ve emailed in a new or amended order. They are really “uptown” in that regard. I’ve emailed the morning of a delivery and they’ve made the requested changes.
We actually like paying more for their product–even though I am a Type A grocery shopper and love to pinch pennies until they beg for mercy. I actually enjoy paying a lot more for Reed’s products. Why? Well, I figure the extra cost is money paid directly to support an awesome local business–not some jerk-off, heartless corporation who overpays their CEO and couldn’t care less about supporting local agriculture. All the food/ag corps of the world LOVE to give lip service and glossy ad space to their “commitment” to supporting local agriculture–yeah, right, their definition of “local” is Peru, Chile, Mexico, Thailand, China and points elsewhere. Paying the price to support Reed’s is a very small investment in the community cost of locally sustainable agriculture and worth every penny of it!
Your weekly dairy costs are buying a whole lot than milk, eggs, cheese, etc. The fact that we even have a place like Reed’s here is an incredible and rare gift. 99.999% of other American communities long ago lost their local dairies and the to-your-door milk deliveries that were once such a part of Norman Rockwell’s American characteritures. Long Live Reed’s and his cows!
We’ve been buying from Reed’s for several years now. I can’t stand the taste of store bought milk any more. The only problems I’ve had are with delivery in the summer on hot days. The milk will only stay cool for a couple of hours unless I remember to put a freezer pack in the milk box the morning of delivery so it will stay chilled until we get home.
It’s also nice to be able to support a local business instead of a mega retailer.
I completely agree with Cafe on Reeds milk……I recently started buying Reeds milk last year when they started offering it at Smiths. It’s not much more expensive than the store brand and the taste is noticably better. Way to go Reeds for making such a quality product! One taste and you’ll be sold too! ![]()
