This post is a bit risky, but the knowledge is widespread (eeeeexcept in IF). The risk part is due to spreading information that could be used for digital piracy. We must disavow any use of this information that could be used for illegal activities.
BitTorrent. Ever hear of it? BitTorrent is an amazing technology invented by a borderline-autistic coder named Bram Cohen. He saw that the problem with sharing digital files is there is only one connection between each downloader and the provider. Anyone who has ever downloaded files that seemed extremely slow has felt the limitations of a single download connection.
Imagine you want to share a book with others, and so you tear out all the pages. Pages 1-10 can go to Sally, pages 2-20 can go to Harry, pages 3-30 can go to Eve, etc.
The magic of BitTorrent is that Sally can then get pages 2-20 from Harry instead of from the original host. Harry can get Sally’s pages, as well as Eve’s. All the users can not only download the parts from whatever parts other people have, but they also share the parts they have with everyone else. Digital files are split up in the BitTorrent technology so they can be shared in a similar way. You can download any digital file (music, movies, software, e-books, images, etc.) much faster using BitTorrent.
Using BitTorrent involves two efforts: installing a BitTorrent software, and finding the BitTorrent files. There are many clients available to use for BitTorrent downloads, but Azureus is a popular one. Azureus works better if your computer’s Java Runtime Environment is up to date, and they provide a link to download the latest JRE file. Download it, install it, and then open it so it’s running.
Next you have to find the BitTorrent files, and this can take you to some darker parts of the Internet. There are many legal, legitimate files available to download through BitTorrent. A great technology show called This Week in Tech is available via BitTorrent download.
There are many other files found by using Google or FlexTorrents search engines.
When you find something interesting, click on the link that includes a .tor file extension, and it’ll start downloading in your client (Azureus). Stay away from the illegal or unethical stuff, of course.
UPDATE:Piratebay.org has proven to be a popular bittorrent site the last several months.

It bears saying that Bittorrent is quickly becoming a widely accepted method used by many commercial companies to distribute files to end users. I\’ve seen this used for game patches, demo\’s, etc. I mention this in reference to the software piracy issue that I\’ve seen associated with this technology. It\’s a tool, and like any tool, it can be used gainfully, or wrongly. It truly is an amazing piece of technology, since it solves a very real problem for software and media distributors. Using bit torrent saves distributors the expenses involved in buying bandwidth, because, less bandwidth is needed directly at the source.
the biggest factor of how fast you get your bittorrent download is the number of people sharing the file. 100 is better than 10.
the best way to get the fastest downloads is at thepiratebay.org and click on Top 100, then the movies category or music
it displays the top 100 torrent downloads of the moment in each category
it may not be exactly what your looking for, but its always fresh and good stuff and best is you get the fastest
every husband needs to get the carmen electra striptease aerobic workout for their wives, its got alot of sharers now
It also matters how much you share what you’ve downloaded, so SEED!
I watch very little television anymore, preferring online content like Tiki Bar, Never Not Funny, etc.
One of the few shows I watch anymore is CBS’ Amazing Race.
Unfortunately for us (and CBS), our dish network DVR keeps choking on that timer, and we have not been able to record it for weeks.
I have given up trying to record My Name is Earl, so I just watch it weekly on NBC’s website. The quality isn’t spectacular, but it is passable and good enough. I only have to watch 3-30 second commercials, which is not bad.
Unfortunately, CBS does not offer the same deal for watching Amazing Race. CBS does not appear to re-air it during the week.
My last alternative is to download it from piratebay.org, where it is usually available the morning after broadcast. It takes about a day to download, and it’s great quality with no commercials.
CBS needs to figure out a better way to distribute their content, like NBC does.
I do not consider it piracy when I try to get the content that I had paid for anyways, and only do not have because of my provider’s equipment failure.
Someone asked what bittorrent was, so I thought I’d comment in this old article that explained it.
Michael Moore’s Sicko was leaked to the bittorrent sites a few weeks ago, even though it premiered in theaters just yesterday.
I’ve heard Michael Moores said he did not care about his movies being pirated and shared, that he has made enough money, and he is more concerned with getting his message out than worrying about making $5 here and there.
thepiratebay.org is a popular source, it’s where I got Sicko.
Stealing is stealing is stealing. You can sugar coat it however you want, but it’s still ripping people off. Sure there’s plenty of legitamate downloads and open source software that free to the public, but probably 60 percent of the content avail through bittorrent is pirated software, movies, games, etc.
You have to give Bram credit for the way he designed this program so nobody could legally go after him with a lawsuit. But I just don’t think its right to exploit this software to download pirated movies, games and software.
Its just wrong….but I guess since you heard a rumour that Micheal Moore said he didn’t care about piracy, that makes it ok to steal his work. I reckon people will say and do whatever they can to justify their actions. Joe, you of all people should know better.
