In order to hold property taxes down we must do the following:
First, we must have leadership on the City Council to control spending. As Mayor I would provide that leadership and in the case of a tie, the Mayor breaks the tie.
Second, we must work to bring new business and growth to the city. New growth will broaden the tax base.
If we control spending and bring new growth the burden of taxes will be spread across a broader area and each of us will pay less. I spent six years on the County Commission and that is the exact program that we used. We lowered the tax levy by 24% over a period of 6 years. It can’t be done overnight. It will take a few years to get there, but it will work if our elected officials have the courage and foresight to do it.

This strategy worked in Meridian, but only because Meridian has exploding exponential growth–which Idaho Falls clearly does not have. The Post Register reported Mayor Milam saying there’s just not that much to be trimmed anymore.

So specifically, what’s one way to attract this huge growth that would be required for your idea to work?
